Day 2, MERIDA - HENEQUEN HACIENDAS: YAXCOPOIL AND SOTUTA DE PEON ESTATES - LOCAL COMMUNITIES YAXCOPOIL, MUNA & TECOH - LIVESTOCK RANCH IN MUNA, MEXICO

  • After a tasty Mexican breakfast (surely at some point you will try famous Mexican “Chilaquiles” for breakfast with red or green sauce, delicious anyway) you will leave to know main agriculture and agro - industry production brought great splendor to Yucatan in the XIX and XX Century: the Henequen also known as Sisal (which is one agave specie plant, not the same as the Blue Agave from which Tequila is produced) there are hundreds of Agave plants species in México.
  • First it will be visited what is considered one of the biggest and most important Estate (Hacienda) in Yucatan of all times, San Geronimo de Yaxcopoil founded in XVII at a distance of 37 kilometers from Mérida, capital of Yucatan. It has been witness of most important economic and social changes in Yucatan from the colonial times to our times. At peak of it greatness the estate Yaxcopoil had 11,000 hectares of land dedicated mostly to the henequen production. It reached at its great moment in XVIII and XIX century an immense extension (now has just 3% of that land extension). It is interesting that the farm estate is owned by one of descendant of the family who bought it in XVIII.
  • Production of Henequen finalized at Hacienda Yaxcopoil on 1984 (37 years ago) when it was obvious producing henequen was not any more a profitable business after more than 100 years of production.
  • Now it is sort of a museum showing the grandeur of these old times in Yucatán between 1850 to 1950 when the boom of the henequen production. It brought so much richness that it was named as the “green gold”. You will see the prosperity it brought to Yucatan and particularly to Mérida when walking through the city, especially if you walk on magnificent European stylish Paseo de Montejo’s avenue where many big mansions were built, illustrating the economic power generated by the Henequen to the high class in Yucatán.
  • After you will see small Mexican town of Yaxcopoil, local community of Mayan origin, you will visit in Muna, México a livestock farm with above 1400 sheeps used for genetic reproduction as well as the meet local consumption in Yucatán, Mexico. Day 3, MERIDA - OXKUTZCAB, MEXICO - MERIDA, YUCATAN

You will learn a lot about today's agriculture in Mexico visiting OXKUTZCAB County, considered the most productive agriculture´s region in Mexico´s south. You will see a combination of old traditional way of farming in Mexico and as the “Mayan Milpa” crop system as well as modern farming techniques in Mexico´s agriculture, all very alive in Mexico´s agriculture today.

Day 4, MERIDA - UXMAL MAYAN SITE - SANTA ELENA COUNTY, DZAN - MUNA - TIMUCUY - MERIDA

Considered by the experts as one of most beautiful Mayan archeological site in Mexico and one of greatest site of the Mayan’s world. Uxmal was one of most important Mayan city in the pre-Hispanic Mesoamerican world. Your local tour guide (born and raised in Yucatan) will explain to you many interesting details of this outstanding Mayan ruin. Uxmal is located at a distance of 83.4 kms from Mérida which will take around 1.10 hours drive. It is a Mayan site you couldn't miss when travel to Mexico´s south.

Today you will be leaving Mérida, moving forward to west of Yucatan to visit 2 very significant Mexico towns: Progreso, one of main port of Mexico and the second biggest Mexican port in the Gulf of Mexico after Veracruz, and the beautiful Mexican small “magical town” of Izamal, one of best small town in Mexico. To see and enjoy Izamal is a must see great attraction in México, which most foreign visitors to Mexico want to see.

  • 8:30 am Check Out Hotel, departing to Progreso, main port of Yucatán and one of the most important of Mexico in the Mexican Gulf.
  • On the way, before you get into Progreso port city of México, you will visit a “Meliponario”, an special Apiario which is formed by a different honey-bee specie original from Yucatan known from the Mayan ancestors time, producing special class of honeybee very nutritive and with many health´s benefits.
