Tequila Experience

The State of Jalisco in the mind of the people is “a traditional mariachi song played by a full mariachi band”. Also it could be a bowl of "birria" (a hearty soup with pulled goat meat) or a "torta ahogada" (a Mexican baguette slathered with a tasty red salsa) but not doubt for most people is the birthplace of Mexico's national drink: the Tequila. Tequila is, without a doubt, one of the most internationally known products to come out of Mexico. So come on the tour through Tequila Country and delve into the culture and traditions of the State of Jalisco and its surroundings.

The origins of tequila go back to pre-Hispanic times, when the fermented agave drinks were consumed by Aztec leaders and high priests. With the arrival of the Spaniards and their distilling techniques, the preparation of the drink was revamped and turned into the deliciously potent tequila that we now know.

The first tequila factories were built in the municipalities of Amatitan and Tequila. Visit the factories and learn about the traditional as well as modern production processes of tequila. Learn about its different classifications and designations of origin.

This route includes the city of Guadalajara, capital of mariachi music, which is another aspect of Mexican culture that goes hand in hand with tequila. Guadalajara is also easy to get to from other points of interest, like the Pueblos Magicos of Tapalpa, Mazamitla and Comala (the latter is found in the state of Colima).

Jalisco also offers the beautiful beaches of Puerto Vallarta, where tourists can enjoy the very unique landscape of jungle and mountains. In the Bay of Banderas, there are all sorts of water sports to be enjoyed as well as spots to go for humpback whale sightings in the winter months. Following the highway to the north, the Riviera Nayarit offers the incredible beaches of Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerias, all the way up to San Blas.
